God Who Works In Us

(The following script was for English service at Seiai High and Junior High School morning chapel. 下に日本語訳があります。)

[F]or it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Philippians 2:13

Destiny is an interesting concept. Strangely, the concept appears across various cultures. Everyone around the world, albeit perhaps reluctantly, feels the concept and even romanticizes it, especially in our pop culture. Do you believe in destiny that God or some other greater beings have already determined our future to a certain degree?

In today's passage, the author teaches us that God works in us to our will and action to fulfill his good purpose. It may be read as if God forces or brainwashes us with what he wants and removes our own free will. However, the author used the word "energeō" which was translated as "work." The Greek word became the root word for the English word "energy." In other words, it does not mean that God forces us to do what he wants, but rather God energizes or motivates us and thus directs how we should act. What do you desire? What is your goal? What do you like? Why do you like it? Why are you heading toward it? Maybe God has been leading you. Maybe God sent you a friend, family, or teacher to tell you something. Maybe God has put you in a certain situation to lead you in a certain direction. You may not realize it, but the Bible tells us that in the very end, God influences your goal and drives you to it to fulfill his good purpose.

As you know, I am a pastor, missionary, and lawyer. If I had not become a pastor, missionary, and lawyer, I would not have decided to move to Japan and if I had not met Jesus, I would not have become a pastor, missionary, and lawyer. If I had not known loneliness in Guam, I would not have sought Jesus and met him. If I had not moved to Guam, I would not have known loneliness. Why did all events in my life happen in such a way? What influenced me and the people around me that brought me to where I am now? Who placed certain people or situations at the exact moment in my life that changed what I wanted and how I wanted? God led me. God motivated me. God opened me the way.

God leads both Christians and non-Christians in his way. God indeed is the Creator and the Lord of lords. He is in control even if you do not like it or agree. Christians know and believe God is in control whereas non-Christians do not recognize or appreciate God's control and guidance. Therefore, we Christians have peace in our hearts. When we experience difficult times, we can fight back and stand back up because we believe in God in control. We believe in God who will fulfill our lives with his good purpose. How about you? Why are you here at Seiai? What are you living for? God perhaps wants to show you his way. God wants you to understand that Jesus is the Lord and will lead you.

運命というのはとても興味深い概念だと思います。不思議なことに、運命という概念は世界中の色んな文化で同じく現れる概念なのです。世界中の誰も、ひょっとすると不本意かもしれませんが、運命を体験していて美化されていると思います。特に映画やアニメではそうです。皆さんは神さまか、ある偉大な存在が私たちの運命や未来をある程度操っていると思いますか。

　今日の聖書箇所では、神さまは私たちの内に働いて、私たちの望みを変え、その望みに合わせて行動するように導いていると、そしてその導きは神さまの良い目的を果たすためだと説明しています。まるで神さまがご自身の意志を私たちに強制したり私たちの意志を無くすために洗脳したりしているように勘違いするかもしれませんが、この聖書箇所で使われている言葉は「energeō」という言葉です。英語（日本語）では「働くWork」と訳されていますが、本当は「エネルギー」の元になる単語です。つまり、神さまは私たちを操るのではなくて、私たちを強めて、私たちがどのように振る舞うべきか導いているお方なのです。皆さんは、何を望んでいますか。何がゴールなのですか。何が好きで、なぜ好きですか。何でそこに向かっていますか。もしかしたら神さまが皆さんを導いているかもしれません。もしかしたら神さまが皆さんに何かを伝えるために周りに友だち、家族、先生を送ったかもしれません。もしかしたら神さまが皆さんを今の状況においている理由は、ある方向に導きたいからかもしれません。皆さんは今気づいていないかもしれませんが、聖書は神さまが皆さんを神さまの良い目的を果たすために導いていると、元気づけていると教えているのです。

　皆さんが御存知の通り、私は牧師であり、宣教師であり、弁護士です。私が牧師、宣教師、弁護士にならなかったら、今日本にいることはなかったでしょう。私がイエス様に出会わなかったら、牧師、宣教師、弁護士になることもなかったと思います。私がグアムで孤独を知らなかったら、イエス様に出会うこともなかったでしょう。私がグアムに引っ越ししていなかったら、孤独を知らなかったでしょう。私の人生になぜこんなことが起こったのでしょうか。何が私、そして私の周りの人々に影響を与えて今に至るようにしたのでしょうか。私に必要な時、ある人々と出会わせてくれたり、そしてある状況を作ったりすることを通して私の望みや行動を導いたのは誰でしょうか。神さまです。神さまが私を導いて、私の道を開いてくださったのです。

　神さまはクリスチャンもそうじゃない人々も同じく導いてくださいます。神さまは創造主で、主の主だからです。他の人々はどう思うか関係なく神さまは全てを治めています。クリスチャンはその神さまの支配を知って、信じている人々で、クリスチャンじゃない人々はその支配や導きに気づいていない人々だと思います。だから、クリスチャンは心の中で平安があると思います。辛い時もまた立ち直って戦える理由は神さまが全てを支配していると信じているからです。クリスチャンは神さまが私たちの人生を良いことで満たすと信じているのです。皆さんはどうでしょうか。なぜ聖愛に来ていますか。何の目的で生きていますか。もしかしたら神さまは皆さんに何かを伝えようとしているかもしれません。もしかしたら神さまは皆さんがイエス様は主であること、そして導いていることを伝えたいのかもしれません。
