The Believer's Freedom

“I have the right to do anything,” you say – but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything” – but not everything is constructive. … So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:23, 31

In recent years, one of the most well-known video game franchises popularized the phrase in the gaming community: “Nothing is true; everything is permitted.” The phrase came from a historical novel that depicts the religion of Islam. It is uncertain whether the Islamic religion upholds this idea since the novel is fiction. But the Bible somewhat illuminates a level of truth to the phrase with a condition. The phrase can be rephrased as “nothing is true except God, and everything is permitted under God.” Christian faith leads its followers to freedom as it is famously written in 2 Corinthians 3:17, “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” But as today’s verse shows, permission is not the same as a suggestion or requirement.

I graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. The college held a significant historical value as it was the second oldest college in the States, being chartered in 1693. In other words, it was very old and had many weird traditions. In the center of the college campus, we had a big lawn called Sunken Garden. Many students played a frisbee game or had a picnic on the lawn. One of the traditions was to run around the lawn without putting any clothes on in the middle of the night. Of course, running naked is illegal in Virginia. A person could be arrested if he or she does it on any street. But because of this weird tradition, it was somewhat permissible to run naked around the lawn in the middle of the night. If a student does it, he or she would not get arrested. But does it mean that all students should do it?

Likewise, many are permissible in Seiai, but it does not mean that everything is recommended. For example, a student’s goal is permissible to be just to pass the class and participate in a club activity. It is not wrong per se if a student only aims to do the minimum but never aims to go above and beyond. People have the freedom to do their best or not. But while acknowledging such freedom, the Bible teaches differently. Although people may have the freedom to live however they want to live, the Bible asks believers to live their lives to the fullest extent. Why? It is because believers are living for God and his glory. Jesus saved Christians from eternal punishment. Now Christians are living to show their gratitude to Jesus. Christians’ life was supposed to be over, but now Jesus gave them a new life. In other words, they want others to know that their Christian God, Jesus, is amazing. If Christians live a good, hardworking life, others will praise God. People will say, “Wow, look at those hardworking Christians! Their God motivates them so much. Believing in God must be amazing!” If Christians live a bad, powerless life, others will think God is useless. People will say, “Wow, look at those lazy Christians! Their God must be boring and powerless.”

How about you? You certainly have the freedom that God and the country gave you. How are you using it? Are you motivated to live your life to the fullest extent?

何年か前に、最も有名なゲーム会社の1つが、「真実はない、すべては許されている。」という言葉をゲームコミュニティーで流行らせたことがあります。この言葉は、イスラム教の歴史に関する小説から生まれた言葉です。この小説はフィクションなので、本当にイスラム教がこの考えを大事にしているかどうかは不明ですが、聖書はこの言葉が多少真実な部分も含まれていると教えています。聖書によると、この言葉は「神以外には真実はない、神の元ではすべてが許される」と言い換えることができると思います。有名な聖書箇所であるコリントの信徒への手紙二3章17節に「主の霊のおられるところに自由があります。」と書いてあるように、キリスト教の信仰はクリスチャンを自由へと導きます。しかし、今日の聖書箇所が教えてくれるように、すべてが許されているとしても、すべてのことが必ずしも良いわけではありません。

私は、バージニア州にあるウィリアム・アンド・メアリー大学を卒業しました。1693年に設立された全米で2番目に古い大学であるので、歴史的な価値がある大学です。非常に古いということもあり、不思議な伝統がたくさんありました。その中の一つを紹介すると、大学のキャンパスの真ん中には、サンクンガーデンという大きな芝生がありました。その芝生の上で、多くの学生がフリスビーをしたり、ピクニックをしたりしました。そこでの学生の伝統が、夜中に裸で芝生を走り回ることでした。もちろん、バージニア州では裸で走るのは犯罪です。他の場所で裸で走ったら絶対に逮捕されます。しかし、この伝統のおかげで、夜中に裸で芝生を走り回ることが許されていたのです。つまり学生が裸で走り回っても逮捕されることはありませんでした。しかし、許されているからといって、全員が裸で走り回ってもいいのでしょうか？

聖愛でも許されていることはたくさんありますが、すべてのことが益になるわけではありません。例えば、赤点を取らずに、部活だけ頑張ることを学校生活の目標とすることは許されているのかもしれません。最低限のことだけを目指して、それ以上のことを目指さないというのは、それ自体が間違っているとは言えないと思います。頑張る自由も、頑張らない自由もあるからです。しかし、その自由を認めながら、聖書は違うことを教えています。人はどう生きるかは自由ではありますが、聖書は信仰者に、自分の人生を精一杯生きることを求めています。なぜでしょうか？それは、クリスチャンが神さまと神さまの栄光のために生きているからです。イエス様はクリスチャンを永遠の罰から救ってくださいました。だから、クリスチャンは、イエス様に感謝するために生きているのです。終わるはずだった人生をイエス様は新しい人生に変えてくださったのです。つまり、クリスチャンの神様であるイエス様がすばらしい方であることを、他の人たちに知ってもらうために生きるのです。クリスチャンが一生懸命に生きていれば、他の人たちは神さまをほめたたえるでしょう。「あの勤勉なクリスチャンはすごい。あの働き者のクリスチャンは、神さまがあんなにやる気を起こさせるんだ。神さまを信じるということは、すごいことなんだ！」と言われるでしょう。もしクリスチャンが悪い、力のない生き方をしているなら、他の人々は、神さまは役に立たないものだと思うでしょう。「あの怠け者のクリスチャンを見てみろ。あの神様は退屈で力がないに違いない。」と言われるでしょう。

皆さんはどうですか？皆さんは確かに神さまと国が与えてくれた自由を持っています。皆さんはその自由をどのように使っていますか？自分の人生を精一杯生きようとしていますか？
